Is It 2012 Already?

December 1, 2009

You know what? Reilly wrote a decent article. It’s not great. And it’s got a hint of that patented Reilly sap. But all in all…it was a good article. I don’t know what to say, but let’s remember for a second that once upon a time, Reilly was actually a good writer. This article about the wrestling Mexican priest from over 20 years ago is a particularly good one. Good story, well-crafted, minimal tired writing crutches. And while Reilly’s latest column is nowhere near the quality of that piece on the wrestling priest, it’s still Reilly’s best offering in quite some time, in my opinion. So, while it doesn’t give me anything to rant about, I’ll kind of enjoy just reading his column without being thrust into an involuntary rage. Who knows, maybe he’s got someone else writing for him now, or maybe he actually realized that he’s been writing shit for some time now and wants to do better, I don’t know. Most likely, it was a largely accidental offering from a guy who used to be good at what he did…kind of like Larry Johnson running for 100 yards last week or when Ken Griffey Jr. hits a homerun. LJ didn’t score any touchdowns, and it wasn’t a dominant performance by any means. And Griffey’s rare homeruns are no longer the towering, awe-inspiring shots he hit when he was The Kid. It’s merely a flash of their old brilliance. You certainly can’t expect them to perform that way on a consistent basis, but you can savor the moment. And that’s what I’m going to with Reilly’s latest column. It’s by no means the Mexican Priest piece; it’s not that good; but it isn’t awful, and it makes you remember what used to be.
