Did Obama Take Reilly’s Advice?

March 4, 2010

Here’s a little update on Reilly’s (not)blog. It’s a follow-up from last week’s column about Kelly Kulick…the female bowler who won a men’s tournament, but nobody cared…blah blah blah. Anyway, there’s something kind of terrifying here, if you think about it.

Never underestimate the power of a little publicity.

Three weeks after Kelly Kulick pulled off arguably the greatest feat in women’s sports history — defeating the world’s best male bowlers in the Professional Bowlers Association Tour’s choicest event, the Tournament of Champions — I wrote a column wondering why nobody has called her, not President Obama and not even the first lady.

”Maybe they hate bowling?” Kulick asked.

Once again…an astute observation, Ms. Kulick.

Well, they may still hate bowling, but they must like Kulick. She’s just been invited to the women in history gala on Monday at the White House.

Good for her. Really. I mean it. That’s nice.

”The PBA Tour said the White House had called them looking for my number and they’d be calling me, and not to hang up because it’s not a prank,” Kulick says. “So I’m going!”

BUT…I don’t like the idea of Obama, or any decision-makers in the White House, reading Rick Reilly’s columns and then acting upon what he writes. I think we can all agree that that’s not a direction we want the country to go in.

Sure, Obama himself probably didn’t read the column and demand that Kulick attend. Although it’s possible it was him, or Michelle Obama (perhaps more likely). Regardless, it’s not good for this great country of ours if people in the White House are reading Reilly columns and then making decisions…even totally unrelated decisions. Seriously, do think it’s a good thing for like the Joint Chiefs of Staff to read a Reilly column over lunch and then go discuss some important matter of national security? Absolutely not. Their brains will be mush after reading Reilly.

Anyway…I hope this is a one time thing, or else we’re in big effing trouble.

OK. A couple more things.

”Since the article, I’ve gotten like 75 hits on Facebook,” she says. “Everybody congratulating me.”

That’s kind of a low number.

But still no endorsement offers?

“Nope.”

And still no boyfriend?

“Nope.”

Which is why, at press time, Kulick still didn’t have a date to the White House event.

Yeesh. That’s kind of sad. I kind of feel bad for this woman…not becaue nobody cares about her title, but because now she has Rick Reilly proclaiming to the world that she can’t get a date…or endorsements. AND, his columns are apparently read at the White House. The man’s a menace I say. He needs to be stopped.
