Rick Reilly Writes Nothing About Jay Cutler

January 13, 2011

If the summarize tool still existed in Word 2010 (and, really, it’s sad that it doesn’t), then today’s Reilly column would have read something like this: “Jay Cutler is not a likable person. Many people agree with the this statement. He’s cold to the media. Greg Olsen disagrees with this statement. Jay Cutler has done some nice things. But he’s unlikable. Does he have to be?”

That’s it in a nutshell. There is quite literally almost no substance to this article. I think Reilly looked at all the rosters of the remaining playoff teams and saw Cutler. “Hey, I know that name! He used to play for the Broncos. Never liked that guy.”

I’m not gonna post any of the article here. Really, that summary up there is all it is. But you can read it if you must. I’ll just give the last little part:

“Deep, deep down, I think he’s a really good guy,” [Tom] Waddle says.

Maybe. But why do we have to look that deep?

Umm…who cares? Not everyone is an outgoing person. Just deal with it. I don’t get this need for every professional athlete to be some sort of comedian with a shit-eating grin who short-sheets broadcasters and smacks reporters on the butt. Not every guy has to be down for hilarious antics all the time. Especially if they’re pretty good at football. Which, despite some turnover problems last year, and a pretty bad O-Line (which Reilly says), Cutler is.

Reilly even goes so far in this article to yell at Cutler for buying gifts a whole freaking wing of a children’s hospital just because Cutler didn’t want to talk about it to the media.

Yeah, the guy comes across as douchey sometimes. And maybe he is. But it sounds like he just doesn’t like talking…to the media or people in general. Whatevs. The media’s usually talking to him after he’s been sacked like 8 times.

The question shouldn’t be: “Why do we have to look that?” It should be: “Why do we even care to look at all?” Just let the guy be who is and move on. Especially if you’re Reilly, who’s not a beat reporter or a Chicago Bears fan. Honestly. Why does he even care?

Also, I think Cutler just has a naturally droopy face. Poor guy.
